China Student Visa (X1/X2) Explained: Documents, Timeline, Pitfalls

A passport and visa documents on a desk next to an application form

Short answer: you cannot apply for a Chinese student visa without your Admission Notice and JW202 form from the university. Once you have those, the visa itself is straightforward — the real deadline pressure is converting the X1 into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival.

The document chain

Everything hangs off three documents, in this order:

  1. Admission Notice — the university’s formal offer, stating programme and dates.
  2. JW202 form (or JW201 for scholarship students via government channels) — the visa application for study, generated by the provincial education department for the university.
  3. X1 visa — stamped at your local Chinese embassy/consulate using documents 1 and 2, your passport, application form, photo, and physical examination record.

No JW202, no visa. This is why universities that are slow to issue JW202s wreck September intakes — chase it, or have us chase it.

Step-by-step: from offer to visa

  1. Receive and check your Admission Notice + JW202 — names, passport number, dates must match your passport exactly. Any mismatch means a re-issue.
  2. Complete the physical examination on the official form at an approved clinic. Everything must be filled, stamped, with a photo affixed and sealed. Incomplete forms are the #1 avoidable rejection.
  3. Book the embassy/consulate appointment (or CVASC centre, depending on jurisdiction) and prepare: passport, forms, photo, admission documents, financial proof if asked.
  4. Attend and pay the visa fee — processing is typically 4–7 working days, with express options at higher cost.
  5. Enter China — the X1 is single-entry; do not leave China before converting it.
  6. Convert to a Residence Permit within 30 days at the local Exit-Entry Administration: usually another physical, the university’s registration paperwork, and the permit fee. The university international office typically coordinates this in registration week.

X2 (short courses)

Under 180 days — summer schools, one-semester exchanges. Simpler: no residence permit, but the visa is fixed-term and generally non-extendable. Plan travel outside China after the course, not during.

Pitfalls that actually cause trouble

  • Name/passport mismatches between Admission Notice and JW202
  • Physical exams older than 6 months or missing the seal
  • Entering China on the wrong visa (L visa “to sort it out later” — no)
  • Departing China before the residence permit is issued — the X1 dies on exit
  • Booking one-way flights before the visa is granted — airlines check

How we help

We track the JW202 from the university side, pre-check every document against the checklist, book appointments, and run the residence-permit process with you during first week. The document checklist tool generates your personalised list in two clicks.

Quick answers

What is the difference between an X1 and X2 visa?

X1 covers programmes longer than 180 days (degrees) and must be converted to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. X2 covers short courses of 180 days or less and cannot be extended into residence.

How long does the China student visa take?

Typically 4–8 weeks from receiving your Admission Notice and JW202 to holding the visa, including embassy appointment waits. Peak season (July–August) is slower — file early.
