Japan Travel Guide 2026: Kyoto, Tokyo and the Perfect First Route
Short answer: fly into Tokyo, out of Osaka (or reverse), anchor on Kyoto 4 nights + Tokyo 3–4 nights, buy Shinkansen tickets individually, and budget US$120–200/day mid-range. Ten days, done properly.
The golden route (8–10 days)
Days 1–4 · Tokyo — Asakusa temples, Shibuya crossing, teamLab, Tsukiji outer market, day trip options (Nikko, Kamakura). Days 5–7 · Kyoto — Fushimi Inari at dawn, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama bamboo grove, Gion in the evening; Nara’s deer and Todai-ji as a half-day trip. Days 8–10 · Osaka (fly out) — Dotonbori street food, Osaka Castle, or swap a day for Nara or Himeji Castle.
Budget reality (per person, mid-range)
| Item | Daily (USD) |
|---|---|
| Business hotel / ryokan-lite | 60 – 120 |
| Food (konbini to izakaya) | 25 – 50 |
| Metro + local trains | 6 – 12 |
| Entries, temples, experiences | 10 – 25 |
Shinkansen Tokyo→Kyoto ≈ ¥13,000–14,000 (~US$90) one way — compare against the ¥50,000 nationwide JR Pass before buying. For Tokyo+Kyoto only, point tickets win.
When to go
- Sakura: late March–mid April (book 5+ months ahead)
- Momiji (autumn leaves): mid November–early December in Kyoto
- Avoid: Golden Week (late April–early May) and Obon (mid August)
- Winter: cheap, quiet, uncrowded temples in light snow — underrated
Visa and logistics
Indians need a Japan visa in advance (tourist, single/multi-entry) — documents are straightforward: form, photo, itinerary, financials, employment proof. Processing runs about 5–7 working days through VFS. We prepare and file both China and Japan visas together for dual-country trips, including cross-border flights.
China + Japan in one trip?
A classic combo: Beijing/Xi’an week, then a Shanghai→Tokyo flight. Two visas, two currencies, one itinerary built to breathe. Our custom tours run this route with guides who hand you over city to city — luggage and all.
Quick answers
Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it?
Since the October 2023 price increase, the nationwide JR Pass pays off only for fast, multi-city routes like Tokyo→Kyoto→Hiroshima round trips. For a simple Kyoto+Tokyo trip, individual Shinkansen tickets are usually cheaper.
How many days do you need in Japan?
Eight to ten days covers Tokyo, Kyoto/Osaka and Nara comfortably. Add Hiroshima or Hakone/Fuji at +2–3 days.
